Term 3 Overview

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to Term 3! I hope that you and your family had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. It really is hard to believe we are half way through the year already, time sure does fly when you are having fun! I have been so incredibly impressed with the student's progress throughout Semester One and the effort and determination they have shown towards all learning activities.

This term our class will be having a major focus on ICT skills in preparation for Online NAPLAN in 2019. Our class will have a double period of ICT skills each week where we will focus on typing. I have also incorporated ICT into our weekly homework with the addition of a paragraph type. I understand that many households may not have a computer and/or printer but from surveying the kids most have an iPad. This activity can also be done on the iPad.

We have many fun events happening this term such as NAIDOC Week incursion, Science Week, Book Week, Life Education Van incursion, Cross Country, Faction Carnival and Parent Learning Journeys. It is set to be a very busy term!

Below I have outlined the concepts to be covered this term.

Literacy

- Writing a variety of text types such as Narrative, Poetry, Procedure and Report

- Experiment with more complex punctuation such as commas, speech marks and ellipsis

2D and 3D Shapes

Within Mathematics this week, students have been learning all about 2D and 3D shapes. We have been focusing on the properties of each type of shape like faces, edges and vertices. The students have had fun creating their own 3D cubes using matchsticks and blu-tac. They were then able to use the 3D representation in order to determine the amount of faces, edges and vertices that a cube has.

You have been working so hard during Maths this term Room 16. Keep up the super work!

Earth and Space Science

In Science, we have moved onto learning about Earth’s resources. Students are learning about the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling in order to conserve and look after our resources on Earth.

Water has been a major focus in this unit. We have been talking about:
·         Where does water come from?
·         Who or what uses water?
·         What is water used for?
·         How can we use water responsibly?

We have been on a water walk around the school, recording places that we saw water being used and how the water was used. We are also having some great fun learning about the water cycle. We have created our own mini water cycle in class to help us understand this concept. Students have done so well learning about evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection! I’ve been very impressed.

Keep up the amazing work Room 16!

Multiplication

Within Mathematics over the last two weeks, students have been working extremely hard on their multiplication of 2s, 5s and 10s. Students have been having fun with counters, popsticks and even their hands in order to consolidate their knowledge of timetables.

Students have been very enthusiastic during these lessons and love working with timetables! Check out some of the photos below of our multiplication fun.

Super Science

A huge congratulations to all the incredible Year 2s of Room 16 for the ginormous effort that you all put into your Science presentations. I learnt so many incredible Science facts and your explanations about your experiments and presentations were outstanding. Well done!
I would also like to thank all the fabulous parents of Room 16 who helped prepare for these amazing presentations. Thank you for your ongoing support!

A special congratulations to Jensen and Kyan, who were the Super Scientist Winners from our class. Jensen did a magnificent presentation about clouds. His explanation and information about clouds was outstanding! Kyan created a lava lamp which he explained extremely well. Impressive work Jensen and Kyan!

Bird Houses

As part of our Biological Science and Design and Technology unit, we created some amazing bird houses. We had to think about characteristics of living things such as birds, as well as their needs and wants, to make sure our bird house design catered for all of these.

We decided that birds need:
- Air
- Warmth
- Shelter
- Food
- Water

We thought birds may want:
- Swing
- Perch
- A friend
- Something to play with

With all of these things in mind, we had 2 lessons to create our bird houses. We then put them outside our classroom and had to predict how many birds would come to our houses. Every hour we went out and checked our bird house to observe how many birds there were. If we didn’t see any birds, we had to think about why this might have been. After this we had to reflect on our bird house and see if we would change anything.

We had so much fun creating our bird houses. Check out our designs below!
